Welcome
Annie
Annie was pulled from a kill pen in Colorado, where she was underweight, looking hopeless and bedraggled. (See first picture below.) While not a typical horse to our mission, Annie needed help, and no one was stepping up. We agreed, and became even more excited about a pretty buckskin when we heard she was gentle and sweet. Our intention was to place her in our youth program. She went to quarantine to a lovely private farm in Colorado, and... dum-dum-dum... we discovered she was heavily bred.
There is nothing, that we know of, physically wrong with Annie. She's just pregnant. We don't adopt out, and certainly can't evaluate, pregnant mares. Would you want to be ridden while being kicked from the inside?
Annie is due pretty much any day. In fact, we wish she'd hurry it up. She was deemed too far along to travel, and is still in her quarantine home with her buddy Stanley.
Once she has her baby, when it is safe for them both to travel, they will arrive here.
We already know that Annie is sweet, kind, and gentle. She is easy to work with and stands for the farrier pretty well. Once she's arrived and settles in, we will begin evaluating what, if any, saddle skills she knows, and what her training level is. If she can join our Youth Program, she is slated for a spot.
Annie has gone from being skinny and allowing her buddy, Heidi (adopted), to protect her, to a rather grumpy mare. Of course, she's carrying a nearly full-term baby -- who can blame her? She's still very interested in her human caretaker Peg, and enjoys the affection given to her. However, we think she's as tired of carrying that baby as we are waiting for it to get here! She does show signs of being head-shy, but that is no surprise, to be honest -- a lot of auction / kill pen horses have head issues. Otherwise, Annie's a pretty great lady, and she has filled out considerably (not just from baby, either!)
