Ice

Background

Ice was pulled from a kill pen in Colorado. Listed as a three-year old, she showed no visible injuries, but did appear to be resistant to the halter. She was in acceptable weight and totally appropriate for our mission. We pulled her with Lilly, and the pair have been together since. However, per the lot, they did not originate from the same farm.

Rehabilitation Plan

Although Ice was listed as a three-year-old, we think she is younger. She is gangly, and leggy, and still butt-high. We would put her at more of a two-year old, if that. Rehab will be coordinated, accordingly.

She does not appear to have any physical limitations presently. She is uneducated, entirely, and scared. She will wear a halter, but has no idea how to lead -- we have already begun working on this.

The plan moving forward is to continue working on leading, building confidence and trust. We will introduce her to the basics of being a horse -- picking up feet, getting groomed, leading and trusting.

From there, we will introduce her to ground work: in-hand, light walk-trot on a lunge. Her training will not be intensive (we are not fans of saddle breaking before age four) but she should have solid skills before she moves to the adoptable list.

Generally About Ice

Ice is a young filly full of TRY. She has no idea what she's doing, at any given moment, and she's afraid of the world surrounding her--who wouldn't be after being run through auctions and dropped off on an agressive kill lot? Still, she tries, and is full of willingness. She is very sweet and enjoys being loved on when she's standing around. It's the "education" part that she stumbles with. It's almost as if she knows she is expected to do something, but has no idea what or how, and has to muster up her courage to give it a shot. At times the look in her eyes and her body language seems to scream "Am I doing this right? Reassure me! I need to do it right!" In quarantine, she quickly developed bonds with her caretakers and her drive for food is very high. That drive makes it easier to convince her into the "scary stuff" with a treat or two. She has only been on the rescue a few days, at the time of this writing, and we are already very much smitten with her.
